Living Cultural Heritage
The significance of the tangible cultural heritage attributes of The Cosmological Axis of Yogyakarta and Its Historic Landmarks nominated World Heritage property are closely intertwined with many living cultural heritage practices.
These include rituals, festivals and performances relating to the cycle of life (birth, marriage and death), venerating ancestors, coronations, royal occasions, Islamic days, connection with the forces of nature and the natural and the macrocosmic-microcosmic worlds, offerings (sesajen), and more.
The Sultanate of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat has, and continues to play, a key role in the practice of many livings Javanese culture and art forms, including dance, music, weaponry and cuisine. These living traditions also form a central part of the identity of the people of Yogyakarta, and are practised widely in the community to this day.
