The Southern Cosmological Axis consists of the 1.5km Gebayanan street section connecting Panggung Krapyak Monument to the Kraton. The street was listed on the Yogyakarta Special Regional Heritage Register in 2017 (SK Gubernur 108/KEP/2017). In the cosmological plan of the city, the journey from the Panggung Krapyak Monument through the Southern Cosmological Axis to the southern part of the Kraton was conceptualized as the human journey from birth to adulthood, where one would be taken care of and cherished by parents and relatives. Along this road, tamarind (tamarindus indica) and tanjung (mimusops elengi) trees have traditionally been planted as symbols of youth. There are still a number of tamarind and tanjung trees along the axis, however, they have only been replanted in the last 20-30 years and are not attributes of the nominated property. Conversely, the journey from the southern part of the Kraton along the Southern Cosmological Axis to the Royal Tombs (located 16km to the southeast) is the route of the royal funeral procession.
